Cloth diapering for newborns??

As most of you know, we've been using cloth diapers on Laurel since she was about 3 months old and absolutely love them. They have been a huge money saver in the long run and almost all of our diapers are still in great condition to pass on to #2. We started using cloth by doing Jillian's Drawers Trial. They have a great return policy (http://www.jilliansdrawers.com/customerservice/returnsandcancellations) which allows you to return any stain-free diaper within 30 days for full store credit! That makes trying out a new diaper pretty risk free!

Right now I'm leaning toward using disposables with the new baby until about three months of age simply because I'm unsure if the cost of purchasing a whole set of tiny, newborn cloth diapers will be worth it (and because there is a LOT of newborn poop.) I'll keep you updated on our decision!

There is a lot of newborn poop....that wouldn't be fun! :( I did like how easy her cloth diaper was to unsnap and put back (if I did it right, haha) at church last week.

I definitely love how easy the pocket diapers are for Laurel. With the new baby we'll probably start out with some prefolded cloth and diaper covers because it is a ton cheaper and you can switch out the cloth inserts and just use the same cover again and again. More than likely we will start cloth diapering earlier than we did with Laurel, but definitely not within the first week or so. (And yes, her diaper looked fine so I'm sure you got it on right!)

hey sarah, do you mind sharing what the initial investment is approximately, which diapers you liked best and how the wash is? I have always wanted to try cloth but was too chicken? I don't know if its too late to start with Kacie, she's already seven months?

Beth,
It completely depends on what kind of diapers you want to do. Honestly, the trial pack from Jillian's Drawers is a really good way to give it a try without any risk. You pay them about $110 and they'll send you maybe 6 or 7 different kinds of diapers to try for 30 days. If you decide you hate cloth, you can send them all back and get all but $10 of your money back. If you like some of them you can keep those and send the rest back and if you want to keep them all they'll give you $10 off your next purchase. That is how I initially tried them. Pocket diapers and all in ones (Fuzzibunz, bumgenius) are the easiest to use but they are also the most expensive (around $15 a piece for diaper and insert). The cheapest is to use prefolded (old style that people used to pin) and a cover on top of them. The covers are around $10 and the prefolds are only $1-2 a piece. They are a little more difficult to quickly put in place but a TON cheaper. The really nice thing about those is that you only have to wipe out the cover (as long as there isn't any poop) and replace the prefold. Another huge resource I just discovered is www.diaperswappers.com where parents sell their used diapers. It takes a little while to figure out the abbreviations and everything but I've already become addicted! I am planning to do mostly prefolds and covers with the newborns. Laurel uses mostly pocket diapers. To be honest, I think 7 month is a really good time to start because you don't have to go to the expense of getting all the little bitty sized diapers and realistically she'll probably be in them for at least another 18 months. For us, using cloth seemed to encourage Laurel to potty train very early because I think she was feeling a little wetness in the cloth when her disposable diaper would feel completely dry. Feel free to call or email me or I can even bring some diapers over to Elizabethton one day and you can see a bunch of them for yourself.
